Ashoka at the Mela

Ashoka Bearsden, part of Harlequin Leisure Group, Europe's largest chain of Indian restaurants, is set to spice up this year's Glasgow Mela when it caters for the two main tents at the free multicultural family festival at Kelvingrove Park on Sunday June 17th.

The programme for this year's Mela (which means 'gathering' in Sanskrit), organised by The Scottish Academy of Asian Arts and sponsored by Glasgow City Council, was today (29.05.07) revealed at a special launch party held at Masala Jaks, the new concept in family dining-Indian style, at the waterfront leisure complex Springfield Quay.

Imtiaz Aslam of Ashoka Bearsden said, ''With more than 30,000 people expected to attend the all-day event, we'll certainly have our work cut out. But I'm sure our selection of mouth-watering pakoras and curries will help feed the appetites of this year's hungry festival-goers''

Based on the traditions of the Indian sub-continent, the Glasgow Mela was established in 1990, during the year of culture, and has grown from being an indoor event to an outdoor extravaganza with over 25,000 people attending last year.

Headline acts have previously included Jassi Sidhu, DCS, Legacy, Malkit Singh, Arif Lohar, Sabri Bros, Apache Indian, Bombay Talkie, Sahota Brothers, Stereo Nation, Dr Zeus and Jazzy B.
